Kyrie Irving‘s Nike signature collection is slowly developing a cult-like following. With the 6’3 point-guard having his hand in every sneaker design and colorway, his sneaker line is catching the eye of sneaker purists, basketball enthusiasts, and collectors alike. Now, with Kyrie speaking openly about his love for skate-culture, he’s teamed up with Cambridge-based sneaker retailer and skate-inspired clothing brand, Concepts, for his latest collaborative effort. CNCPTS is single-handedly responsible for curating the legendary ‘Lobster’ Nike SB Dunk Collection that took the sneaker industry by storm. Without further ado, check out the Concepts x Nike Kyrie V ‘Ikhet’ in the photos below.
The Aesthetic of the Concepts x Nike Kyrie V ‘Ikhet’
The Nike Kyrie V is already an elite fusion of ethos, fluid aesthetic, and performance technology. Fortunately, CNCPTS Creative Director, Deon Point, wanted to push things even further and incorporate historical symbolism into the silhouette. The Concepts x Nike Kyrie V ‘Ikhet’ draws inspiration from ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics as well as Kyrie’s tattoos and spirituality.
The sneaker features a perforated ‘Sand Khaki’ upper inspired by the Egyptian pyramids and surrounding climate. And the tongue of the sneaker takes on a ‘Team Red’ hue, in commemoration of the nose of the Sphinx, which is rumored to glow red prior to its decomposition throughout the years. Lastly, the nearly-iridescent purple sole of the sneaker is representative of the Egyptian sunsetting skies.
Chiseled ‘Metallic Silver’ Nike branding catch the eye, while the sneaker’s Venus Flytrap-inspired shroud crowns from the medial side of the silhouette. The left heel of the silhouette features the Egyptian hieroglyphic of the Eye of Horus. The Eye of Horus is a symbol of protection, good health, royal power, and the Egyptian sky god, Horus, himself. The inner eye-design of the Hamsa, also known as the Khamsa, is found throughout the sneaker’s sole traction pattern.
Concepts Creative Director, Deon Point, had to say about what he discovered through his research,
“I found out the mortar used remains a mystery to scientists — they still can’t figure how it stuck together, but it’s some of the strongest stuff ever made. I learned that the limestone glowing in the sun made the pyramids glow brighter than a diamond. And one thing that really got me: there was a 20-ton door on one of the pyramids that (were) so precise, you can’t squeeze a credit card through the seams — but it can be opened with one hand.”
