During an appearance last week on D.C.’s Majic 102.3, Snoop Dogg said that he wanted a multi-part structure biopic done about his life, citing Netflix’s Narcos as the structure for his film.
“I’m thinking like a Snoop Dogg biopic,” he told host Vic Jagger. “late ’60s with my mother and father; pops in Vietnam; ’70s, when I was born in ’71, in the hippie era growing up; ’80s, football, selling candy—uh oh!—cocaine, selling drugs, gang-banging; ’90s—uh!—rap […] You see what I’m sayin’? To me, that’s more enticing than a two-hour Snoop Dogg movie.”
As Complex pointed out, Snoop’s success isn’t just limited to music; the rapper has found money in many ventures such as TV, clothing, mobile apps, restaurants and cannabis. Deciding to add “biopic” to this list, Snoop enlisted director of the mega-hit Black Panther, Ryan Coolger and famous writer, producer and director, Lee Daniels (Empire, Monster’s Ball.)
Snoop Dogg seemed pretty excited when dropping the news via Vic Jagger’s Instagram.
This is quite a different tune than what Snoop was saying back in 2015, when the N.W.A’s hit biopic, Straight Outta Compton hit theatres. While Snoop Dogg was depicted by an actor in the film, at the time he wasn’t quite feeling a biopic about his own life.
“…right now I’m not into it. To me, that’s bandwagon. You shouldn’t do a movie about your life just because you saw the success of Straight Outta Compton,” he told Rolling Stone magazine.
Many people are happy that Snoop changed his mind and managed to secure some top talent in directing and producing. Everything is still in the beginning stages so there’s not a release date yet. However, with the three men on board, this biopic should be dope.
