Looks like another Willy Wonda reboot is in the works… and Donald Glover is in talks to play the iconic Chocolate Factory owner.
According to Collider, the actor/rapper is on the shortlist of stars being considered for the role of Willy Wonka, including Ryan Gosling and Ezra Miller.
While the cast hasn’t been confirmed, Paul King (Paddington) has been tapped to direct, with David Heyman (Harry Potter) as producer and Simon Rich as screenwriter (Man Seeking Woman).
Unlike the 2005 Johnny Depp reboot Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which was based on the 1971 original starring Gene Wilder, the upcoming film will explore Wonka’s origin, specifically how he amassed his fortune and launched n candy empire.
If Glover lands the main role, it’s just the latest in his busy career. In addition to starring in and producing FX’s Atlanta, he recently appeared in Solo: A Star Wars Story and will voice Simba in Disney’s live-action remake of The Lion King. There’s also rumors that he’s in talks to join the cast of Black Panther 2 as a villain.
As far as music, his latest single “This Is America” has been certified platinum after topping the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks.
