The Ocean’s film series hasn’t released a new installment in over a decade, until now. On June 8, Ocean’s 8 will be hitting theaters and will be one of the hottest films out.

The modern-day reboot of the 1960’s Rat Pack original spawned three films, each of which broke the $100 million mark at the domestic box office. But, this new installment will give them a run for their money. Ocean’s 8 will be just as good, if not better than any Ocean’s film prior, and here’s why.

Ocean’s 8 is made up of a star-studded cast, including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, and Helena Bonham Carter. As if these names aren’t reason enough, it also brings us a modern day comedic heist, but with a twist.

The original Ocean’s 11, 12, and 13 follow a man by the name of Danny Ocean. Upon being released from jail, Danny plans an elaborate casino heist in Vegas, and succeeds. The series follows him and his crew through a robbery, blackmail, and more. While Ocean’s 8 doesn’t follow Danny, it follows a family member by the name of Debbie. After being raised in the same family and spending time in prison, Debbie’s past leads her on a crazy crime spree, just like her brother Danny.

Unlike the played-out casino robbery that we’ve seen in countless movies, Ocean’s 8 puts a fun twist on the game. Debbie and her crew have their eyes on a massive jewelry heist, and the Met Gala ball is their target. The Met Gala ball is an annual event where designers get a chance to show off their work, with major celebs being their models. Ocean’s 8 is essentially taking the celebs that attend the Met in real life and turn them into the bad guys. It’s offering us a whole new perspective on the event, but in a comedic way. Genius? I’d say.

Not only is Ocean’s 8 star-studded and culturally aware (pop culture, that is), but if you haven’t noticed, it provides us with an entirely female cast. With all of the turmoil in today’s society, this movie comes at a time where women’s empowerment is needed the most. Sexual assault scandals continue to rip through Hollywood, while equality battles are fought in even the biggest of companies. What better way to prove just how powerful women are then with eight female bad asses?

Ocean’s 8 will be like no other Ocean’s movie we have seen. It is bringing us a star-studded crew, a comedic reference to pop culture today, AND an all female cast. No other Ocean’s movie has served us with such a dynamic platter, and we’re sure the ratings will show.

Will you be showing the film some love?
