Disney continues to expand Star Wars brand. The latest develop is an upcoming animated series called Star Wars Resistance.
Lucasfilm says the next project will be executive produced by Dave Filoni (who led Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Rebels), alongside Athena Portillo and Justin Ridge, as well as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Brandon Auman, reports Gizmodo.
Star Wars Resistance is described as an “anime-inspired” series set in an “uncharted time frame prior to The Force Awakens.”
The series will follow a young pilot recruited by the Resistance named Kazuda Xiono, who is assigned a secret surveillance mission of the First Order. Familiar characters that will make appearances include BB-8, Captain Phasma, and Poe Dameron, who will be reprised by Gwendoline Christie and Oscar Isaac, respectively.
“The idea for Star Wars Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots,” says Filoni. “My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that’s been a big influence on me. There’s a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time.”
Star Wars Resistance is expected to premiere on the Disney Channel later this fall.
