Legendary singer Mariah Carey has recently revealed that she’s been secretly battling bipolar disorder for nearly two decades, but has decided that now is the time to go public.
In an interview with People, an issue set to hit newsstands on Friday (April 13), the singer says she struggled to believe the diagnosis after being hospitalized for a physical and mental breakdown that occurred back in 2001.
While living in denial and isolation, Carey says she feared that someone would expose her illness.
Carey is currently in therapy and under medication for bipolar II, which is recognized by periods of depression, hypomania, and irritability. Thankfully, she has also explained that her meds do not cause her to experience sluggishness and extreme tiredness.
“I got back to doing what I love — writing songs and making music,” Carey explained.
