Afropunk returns with this year’s installment of its iconic festival, and reveals some of the biggest names in soul and hip-hop as part of its coveted lineup for the Brooklyn, New York leg of the event.
The weekend-long music fest’s featured headliners will be Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae, and Tyler the Creator.
Afropunk’s Brooklyn festival will be held at Brooklyn’s Commodore Barry Park in Fort Greene on August 25 and 26. In addition to Badu, Monae, and Tyler, other acts include Miguel, The Internet, H.E.R., Daniel Caesar, Jessie Reyez, Smino, and Jaden and Willow Smith.
This year’s theme , “The People Will Resist,” was selected to bring “together AFROPUNK ideology and the people who support it, in resistance to those that strive to oppress.”
Afropunk festivals have continued to garner a successful turnout in the States, as well as in international territories, spanning across Paris, London, and Johannesburg, South Africa. A new ticketing system called Buy One, Give One (BOGO) has been adopted by Afropunk with a very important purpose. Each general admission ticket sale will allow one New York City youth, who has been participating in art programs like Recess Art and Young New Yorkers, admittance into the festival.
In addition to the Brooklyn fest lineup, Afropunk has also announced it’s Atlanta bill, taking place on October 13 and 14. At the moment, special guests hitting the stage include N.E.R.D, Noname, Little Simz, Kari Faux.
