Singer Ashanti has joined the number of women speaking out against sexual harassment in the workplace and share her own #MeToo story.
According to Essence, the Grammy Award-winning artist revealed that an unnamed producer once demanded $45,000 to work on her album because she rejected his invitation to join him in the shower.
“I’ve come across a situation where there was a certain producer that, you know, he had his little crush or whatever, but it wasn’t anything new, you know? And once I said ‘No,’ all of a sudden the track became $45,000,” Ashanti shared on SiriusXM’s “Conversations with Maria Menounos.”
The former Murder Inc. act went into detail about what the indignant producer attempted to pressure her into. “It’s funny because he said something like, ‘Well, just take a shower with me and let me do this.’ ”
It wasn’t until after Ashanti’s family intervened and questioned the man about his behavior did she finally receive an apology.“The way that apology came in, I actually got three records for free! And, I got two of them mixed and mastered for free also.”
Although Ashanti was able to immediately take control of her situation, many women, particularly in the music industry, are rendered helpless in these circumstances and left feeling alone. As Cardi B has mentioned, the #MeToo movement has been slow to move in hip-hop and has failed to be as vocal as it is in Hollywood. Hopefully, Ashanti’s story gives hope to other victims.
