When Adidas originally teamed up with Parley to create a shoe made of plastic from the ocean, it sounded cool and supported a great cause. But, who knew it’d be such a success?
According to the company, they sold $1 million shoes with Parley in 2017.
In an interview with CNBC, Adidas CEO Kasper Rorsted said companies like Parley is where they invest, rather than acquisitions.
“That’s where we invest money. In companies that have a technology that we need or companies that have materials that are unique,” he said. “Like Parley, plastic from the oceans, where we last year sold 1 million shoes made out of ocean plastic.”
Adidas launched a number of sneakers with Parley in 2017, including an iteration of its popular Ultra BOOST runner.
Each pair reuses 11 plastic bottles.
