Nearly a year ago, Johnny Manziel claimed he was sober and ready to make a return to the NFL. However, no team has shown interest in the troubled quarterback, and it’s safe to assume his NFL career is over.

This week, fans of Manziel got a glimmer of hope at potentially seeing him play again… in the WWE-backed XFL.

After Vince McMahon made the official announcement that the XFL would return in 2020, the internet lit up, suggesting that Johnny Football would be a perfect fit.

“I was told Johnny Manziel will be a No. 1 target for new league,” podcaster/former sports reporter Glenn Mooore tweeted.

To further add to the speculation, Manziel himself hashtagged #XFL2020 at McMahon, which has been retweeted more than 20,000 times, as of press time.

Despite the news, McMahon said — during the press conference — that the XFL won’t sign players with criminal records.

He told ESPN: “We are evaluating a player based on many things, including the quality of human being they are. If you have any sort of criminal record or commit a crime you aren’t playing in this league.”
