UFC middleweight Jacare Souza made his case for an eventual title shot on Saturday night (Jan. 27), with an exciting knockout of Derek Brunson.
Souza (25-5) finished the dangerous Brunson via TKO at 3:50 of the opening round in the headlining fight at UFC Fight Night at Charlotte’s Spectrum Center.
He hurt Brunson (18-6) with a right head kick, before swarming him with punches to the side of the head as he covered up against the cage.
The 38-year-old Souza previously admitted that he contemplated retirement in 2017 after a pair of surgeries, but willed his way to a return.
The fight was a rematch for the two. The two last fought in 2012 under Strikeforce, with Souza winning via KO just 41 seconds. Despite his long career in MMA, he’s yet to get a title shot. He’s 8-2 in the UFC.
Also at UFC Charlotte, Andre Fili defeated Dennis Bermudez via split decision, Gregor Gillespie defeated Jordan Rinaldi via TKO, and Drew Dober took a unanimous decision over Frank Camacho.
