Earl Sweatshirt’s father, acclaimed poet Keorapetse Kgositsile has died, reports SABCNews. He was 79 years old.
Details surrounding his death were not reported, but given his age, we’re assuming it was due to natural causes.
Kgositsile began his career as a writer for the politically-driven newspaper New Age. In addition to reporting, he also shared poetry with the paper and was a member of the African National Congress liberation movement.
He ultimately left South Africa in exile and moved to the U.S., where he recived an MFA in poetry at Columbia University. After graduating, he made a name for himself in New York City’s poetry scene.
