Vandana Hart is a former UN advisor and professional dancer whose new Netflix show, “We Speak Dance”, drops worldwide on New Year’s Day. In anticipation of the show’s launch, she shared her favorite behind-the-scenes stories from filming with us.
Paris is known for its architecture and provenance. It’s a city with history and culture, but in the shadows of all those monuments and museums, something new is brewing. Vandana met Goku, one of the world’s top electro dancers, in a way that can only be described as serendipitous. If Paris is a melting pot on the surface, electro is a reflection of this; a fusion of many styles that evolved organically in the city’s nightclubs.
Vandana explained how she met Goku. “We were filming another dance event and Goku walked by and someone said, ‘That guy is a sick electro dancer.’ I ran after him and asked if we could film him for 5 minutes. This took 3 hours and he taught me the electro basics: the gate, butterfly, and haircut. He ended up becoming the star of the episode.”
Whether it’s via B-Boy stance or happenstance, success is sometimes just where preparation and opportunity meet. If Vandana hadn’t chased Goku down, this window into the Paris underground wouldn’t exist. Take risks. Shoot your shot, because you never know what might happen.
We Speak Dance was filmed across five different countries, including Lebanon, Vietnam, France, Nigeria and Indonesia. It premieres on Netflix on Jan. 1.
