Legendary underground emcee MF Doom took to social media this week to reveal some very sad. personal news. His 14-year-old son has passed away.
“THE GREATEST SON ONE COULD ASK FOR. SAFE JOURNEY AND MAY ALL OUR ANCESTORS GREET YOU WITH OPEN ARMS. ONE OF OUR GREATEST INSPIRATIONS. THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING US TO BE YOUR PARENTS. LOVE YOU MALI,” DOOM wrote on Facebook.
Details surrounding the death of DOOM’s son, Malachi Ezekiel Dumile, is unknown.
Due to the rapper’s extremely low profile in his personal life, the tragedy saw an outpouring of support from fans on social media.
Dionne Farris, a former vocalist for the hip-hop group Arrested Development, sent her condolences, writing: “Doom, my sincerest condolences to you. Prayers go out to you and your family.”
This isn’t the first family tragedy DOOM has faced. In 1993, je lost his younger brother Dingilizwe Dumile (aka DJ Subroc) to a car accident. Both emcees were members of the group KMD, which disbanded shortly after the death, as they were dropped from their record label. This event caused the elder Dumile, who was going under the alias Zev Love X, to go on an extended hiatus, before emerging as MF Doom in 1997.
His brother brother’s passing was mentioned on the hook for the song “DOOMSDAY,” off his classic album Operation Doomsday. “Ever since the womb ‘til I’m back where my brother went / That’s what my tomb will say / Right above my government, Dumile/ Either unmarked or engraved, hey, who’s to say?” he raps on the song.
As of press time, it is unknown what caused Malachi Dumile’s passing. Our condolences are with the family.
