The X-Men will finally join Marvel, after Disney agreed to acquire a majority stake in 21st Century Fox, including its movie and TV division.

According to the reports, the deal is for $52.4 billion in stock.

For fans of the Marvel universe, that means that the film rights to franchises like X-Men and Deadpool will now come under the Disney-owned Marvel umbrella. This would open up the door for franchises to cross over into the others, like the X-Men teaming up with The Avengers. Or, the Fantastic Four joining the mix. Wolverine teaming up with Iron Man... the possibilities are endless.

"Bringing Disney and Fox together will combine some of the world’s most iconic entertainment franchises," said Disney head Bob Iger.

In addition, Disney will buy Fox’s majority stake in Hulu’s video streaming service.

Following the news, reports came in that suggest the deal might be blocked by federal regulators.

So, Disney unveiled plans for a separate, backup agreement, in which it would pay a $2.5 billion "breakup fee", according to Variety. The agreement also includes a breakup fee of $1.52 billion payable by either side if Disney or Fox pulls out of the transaction for reasons other than regulatory problems.
