“Dont talk to me about the Grammys,” Vince Staples told fans in a series of now-deleted tweets, after his acclaimed album Big Fish Theory failed to receive any nominations. According to Staples, low sales likely contributed to album being overlooked for a nod.
Many fans were initially concerned with the snub, causing them to bombard the Long Beach rapper with numerous tweets about the Grammys. Staples sought to clarify his disregard for the awards to his fans, stating: “In clearer words for the ones of you that aren’t that bright, I dont care like that.”
Due to the harsh tone of his tweets, Staples eventually apologized to fans. “I just realized you people really care about this. I apologize if I hurt anyones feelings with my disregard for the trophy,” he said.
This isn’t the first time Staples has expressed his disdain for the Grammys and award shows in general. Prior to the results he stated:
“A Grammy means something specific; it means you’re at the pinnacle of creating music….With that being said, I don’t really know if it hits the mark every time because the things that are better don’t always win. I don’t need any award to tell me that I’m better than everyone else or not better. Differentiation is key to me. I don’t really believe in better or worse; it’s subjective.”
