While most rappers wear the usual uniform of jewelry and designer threads, Chance the Rapper’s signature piece of clothing is his “3” cap.

Almost every time you see the Chicago rapper, he’s rocking his signature cap. Have you ever wondered why?

Well, he’s always loved rocking baseball caps, and it was also a form of rebellion for him as a teen growing up in Chi-town. “I used to always rock a cap when I was in high school and get them taken away. It was an excessive amount,” Chance told GQ earlier this year. “Like, so often that at the end of each school year, there would be a box of all the confiscated caps. After they gave back a few caps to other kids, they would just give me the box because the rest were all my hats. So I think, in one part, it’s a rebellion.”

Before he started rocking his “3” hat, Chance usually rocked a Chicago White Sox hat to rep for his home team. In fact, he linked with the MLB and New Era in 2016 and redesigned the iconic cap for a limited capsule drop.

Eventually, Chance started rocking his “3” cap and never looked back. What’s so special about the number 3?

“I wanted to put something else on the hat. And so I decided to do ‘3’. I just thought that that made the most sense because it was the third project,” Chance explained in that same interview with GQ. “Also, I was having a lot of trouble figuring out what the title of the project was going to be and what typography to put the title in. The original title for the project was, uh, The Magnificent Coloring Book. But that’s just so many words and it looks so sh*tty, no matter how I put it on the hat.”

So, for those wondering, “3” stands for Chance the Rapper’s third mixtape, Coloring Book, which dropped in 2016 to critical acclaim. “I’ve rationalized it to myself that it stands for the third mixtape, the Holy Trinity, and the three-pronged family of myself, my daughter, and my girl,” he also added.

Aside from three mixtapes, Chance also won three Grammys earlier this year — including Best New Artist, Best Rap Album (for Coloring Book) and Best Rap Performance (for “No Problem”).
