Kevin Spacey became embroiled in a sexual assault scandal over the weekend, which was followed by a statement by the actor, who apologized and came out as gay.

Then on Monday (Oct. 30), Netflix announced that its popular series House of Cards, which stars Spacey as President Frank Underwood, is ending its run, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The series is currently in production of what will be the sixth of the show. The final season of House of Cards will premiere on Netflix sometime in 2018.

For Netflix, House of Cards was an important show. The company bought the rights to the show back in 2011 for an estimated $100 million... which came before streaming became the dominant player in original programming.

House of Cards eventually premiered in 2013 to critically acclaim, nabbing 46 Emmy nominations over the years and winning six.

It was the beginning of a slate of original shows by Netflix, including popular series like Stranger Things, Orange is the New Black and Narcos.

Netflix's original programming focus has helped grow its subscriber base to more than 100 million users worldwide to date.
