Nearly seven years after its first release, Microsoft has announced that production of the Kinect has ended, reports Fast Co.
Since its release in November 2010, the 3D camera for the Xbox 360, the Kinect has sold around 35 million units and became the fastest-selling consumer device a year later according to Guinness World Records.
Microsoft tried to transition the accessory to the new Xbox One, but pricing and features didn’t live up to expectations.
Instead, the company unbundled the Kinect from Xbox One and manufactured an accessory to attach the Kinect to the Xbox One S.
Although the Kinect is gone, Microsoft will be using the Kinect technology for other endeavors, including laptops shipping with Windows Hello cameras for facial recognition and the latest Windows Mixed Reality headsets.
