While Cardi B topped the Billboard Hot 100 this week and made history, Post Malone is breaking records as well… with his new single “Rockstar.”
The 21 Savage-assisted track debuted at No. 2 on the Hot 100, while also smashing Apple Music’s single-week streaming record in its opening week, with over 25 million streams. The record was previously held by DJ Khaled’s feature-heavy single, “I’m the One.”
Apple Music’s support of Post helped him acheive the feat, according to Apple’s head of artist curation, Carl Chery.
“We just have a long history of supporting Post Malone, even before he got signed. ‘White Iverson’ was being heavily supported in iTunes — that song is old enough that Apple Music wasn’t even live yet,” he told The Verge. “We were supporting him heavily back then, and we did the same thing with the Stoney project last year. The process is pretty simple for us, if we like it, we support it.”
Due to this relationship, Post Malone’s “Rockstar” received prominent placement on three of Apple’s largest rap playlists: The A-List, It’s Lit, and #OnRepeat. It generated 56 percent of the first week streams, as well as 41 percent of the market share, according to the report.
Post Malone is currently working on his next album, titled Beerbongs and Bentleys.
