Warner Bros. and DC are reportedly working on a standalone film for The Joker.
According to Deadline, famed director Martin Scorsese is involved in the film, which he will produce alongside Todd Phillips (The Hangover), who will direct.
While details are scarce, The Joker film will uncover his origins and will be set in Gotham City in the early ’80s.
“The intention is to make a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film[…] that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era, like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy,” writes Deadline.
Because it will feature a younger Joker, actor Jared Leto is not expected to star in the film. He previously starred as The Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad and will return to reprise the role in the upcoming sequel and the Harley Quinn spinoff.
