A big change has been announced for the hyped Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor megafight. They will fight in 8-ounce gloves.

According to ESPN, the Nevada State Athletic Commission approved a request from both fighters on Wednesday (Aug. 16) to wear the smaller boxing gloves, a decision that comes from 10 days before their fight on August 26.

This first came up earlier this month, when Mayweather (49-0, 26 KOs) wrote on social media: “Let’s fight in 8 oz gloves.”

Floyd has fought the majority of his career in 8-ounce gloves, while McGregor has used 4-ounce gloves throughout his MMA career.

In a recent interview with ESPN, McGregor predicted he would knock out Mayweather in just two rounds… if they fought in 8-ounce gloves. “If we are in 8-ounce gloves, he will be floored multiple times in the first round,” he said. “I believe first-round KO in 8-ounce gloves. The fact I can’t follow through [like] in MMA and pound the head into the canvas, and there’s a 10-count in boxing, maybe I’ll give him second round. But 8-ounce gloves, he will be done in two.”

Mayweather has promised to bring the fight to McGregor, and also said that if the fight goes a full 12 rounds, than it should be considered a win for McGregor and a loss for him.
