Although Elon Musk has expressed concerns over the evolution of AI, his company OpenAI has created robots that have defeated the world’s best players in competitive esports.
The company brought its 1-v-1 robot to The International 2017 tournament to challenge professional players in multiplayer online battle arena, Dota 2. Musk notes that the game is “vastly more complex than traditional board games like chess & Go.”

OpenAI’s bots were able to defeat the world’s best players after just two weeks of real-time learning. “Our bot has learned — entirely via self-play — to predict where other players will move, to improvise in response to unfamiliar situations, and how to influence the other player’s allied units to help it succeed,” the company explained in a blog post.
From there, OpenAI will create a team of 5-v-5 Dota 2 bots, which they will test against the top human teams.
