Floyd Mayweather just upped the ante for his upcoming fight against Conor McGregor, which could level the playing field a bit.
Mayweather is a heavy favorite to win the fight, with most believing McGregor’s only shot to win being a fluke KO punch. Well, this will give him even a better chance: 8 oz. gloves.
Both fighters had previously agreed to fight in 10 oz. gloves — standard for a super welterweight bout. But, Conor is used to fighting 4 oz. mitts in the UFC, so experts believe that fighting in larger gloves would negate the power behind his vicious left.
With that said, Floyd shocked fans this week, when he posted a statement on Instagram, revealing that he is meeting Conor’s initial demand that they fight in 8 oz. gloves. UFC president Dana White previously said the weight of the gloves was one of the main issues in making a deal.
“McGregor, let’s fight in 8 oz. gloves. Don’t believe what you hear in the media. Don’t believe what you hear on blog sites. If it’s not coming directly from me, then it’s not true,” Mayweather wrote. “I’m telling McGregor ‘let’s fight in 8 oz gloves’. McGregor can fight in any brand he prefers or chooses. I’ll be wearing 8 oz. Grant gloves. Whatever advantage McGregor needs to feel more comfortable in the ring, I’m willing to accommodate. Let’s give the boxing and MMA fans what they want to see.”
Following the announcement from Floyd, McGregor took to Instagram with a response. “We are prepared to destroy Floyd. Pick whatever size gloves you want as well little man. I fight with 4oz. I don’t give a f*ck about the size of the glove. I am coming sprinting at you with bricks. Know that. Brittle hands,” he wrote.
Mayweather-McGregor takes place on Aug. 26 in Las Vegas. Whether the glove size makes a difference will remain to be seen.
