Former NBA player Lamar Odom’s struggles with drugs has been widely documented and reported in the media, but he hasn’t addressed those issues in-depth… until now.

Now sober, the 37-year-old opens up about about his longtime drug use, struggles with addiction and the overdose that nearly killed him, in a piece published by The Players’ Tribune.

Specifically, Odom opens up about his near death scare back in October 2015, when he was found unconscious at a Las Vegas-area brothel and suffered 12 strokes and two heart attacks.

“At some point, the main doctor came in and told me what had happened,” Odom wrote in the piece. “He said, ‘Mr. Odom, you’ve been in a coma for the last four days. Do you understand?’ I couldn’t talk. So I just nodded. He said, ‘It’s a miracle that you’re here. We didn’t think you were going to make it.'”

Odom ultimately says it’s still “an everyday struggle” to stay clean.
