The trend among rappers on social media is to hold up a stack of cash to their ear like they’re making a call. Who started it though? It’s unclear, but 50 Cent is taking credit.
Fif took to Instagram this week, making the claim that he and Floyd Mayweather came up with money phone back when the two were best friends and launched The Money Team.
“Just so you know where the money to the ear thing came from,” 50 captioned in a photo of himself and Floyd posing with cash. “The original TMT.”
Check out the video below of the two doing it back in 2011.
The proclamation comes after Jay referenced the post on the 4:44 single “The Story of O.J.”, where he raps artists “on the ‘gram holding money to your ear.”
50 isn’t the first artist to respond either. Future shared a money phone selfie on Snapchat days after 4:44 dropped.
