CONFIRMED!! Following reports that Mayweather Promotions had reserved an Aug. 26th date for an unspecified event, the fight has been officially announced.
Floyd Mayweather himself took to Instagram on Wednesday (June 14) to make the announcement: a fight with UFC superstar Conor McGregor in Las Vegas on the aforementioned date.
Floyd will return from a 23-month retirement — and at age 40 — to face McGregor in a boxing match.
According to ESPN, UFC president Dana White appeared on SportsCenter as well, saying the fight would be at the boxing junior middleweight weight limit of 154 pounds, both fighters would use 10-ounce gloves, and the fight will take place at the T-Mobile Arena. Additionally, Mayweather-McGregor will broadcast on Showtime PPV.
“We’ve been in negotiations for a while,” White told SportsCenter. “Negotiations went smooth. Floyd is surrounded by some smart people, and we got this thing done. The impossible deal is now done.”
Moments before Mayweather’s announcement, McGregor tweeted out: “THE FIGHT IS ON.” He also added a photo of himself and Floyd Mayweather Sr., instead of Mayweather Jr.
