UFC light heavyweight contender Alexander Gustafsson had a big night in Stockholm, Sweden on Sunday night (May 28) — earning a knockout victory over Glover Teixeira and getting engaged.
Gustafsson (18-4) put on a show in front of a crowd in his native Stockholm, when he knocked out Teixeira in the fifth round. He snapped Teixeira’s head back, with two uppercuts and then a powerful right hand that dropped him.
“He just took every shot,” said Gustafsson, after the fight. “He’s a great fighter, and it’s an honor to fight him in my hometown.”
After the win, Gustafsson asked the audience for a moment, as he called his girlfriend into the cage. He thanked her for giving birth to their daughter, said he loved her very much and asked her to marry him.
Gustafsson, 30, fought Jon Jones in 2013, and lost a narrow decision. He also came up short in a title fight against Daniel Cormier in October 2015, who took a split decision.
Cormier (19-1) is scheduled to defend his title against Jones (22-1) at UFC 214 on July 29… after which Gustafsson may be next in line for a shot at the belt.
The UFC has Gustafsson ranked as the No. 1 contender in the Light Heavyweight division.
