“Fate of the Furious” Breaks Global Box Office Record With $532M

The Fate of the Furious

Just when you thought the Fast and the Furious franchise couldn’t get any bigger… it has.

The Fate of the Furious, the eighth installment in the franchise, raced to a record-shattering $532 million global debut over Easter weekend… a new RECORD!!!

The number breaks the previous record ($529 million), held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which grossed $98.8 million domestically and $433.2 million overseas.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Furious 8 had the advantage of opening in China, which earned a massive $192.1 million — the biggest three-day opening in history and the top opening ever for a Hollywood title. Overall, the film debuted at No. 1 in all 63 foreign markets.

It did $100.2 million domestically and $432.2 million overseas for a global total of $532.5 million.

THR says Furious 8 also scored the second-biggest launch of the franchise behind Furious 7’s $147 million, with the hype fueled by the final appearance of the late Paul Walker, who died in a tragic car crash in November 2013.
