Boston Celtics star Isaiah Thomas suffered a family tragedy this weekend, when his sister was killed in a one-car crash on Washington highway.
Chyna Thomas crashed early Saturday morning (April 15) on Interstate 5 in Federal Way, WA and died on the scene. She was just 22 years old.
Police said Chyna’s car drifted onto the left shoulder of the highway at around 5 a.m., traveling about 50 feet before hitting a large metal pole. She was was not wearing her seat belt.
Isaiah was talking to a reporter after practice when teammate Avery Bradley pulled him away and broke the news to him. He never returned.
The Celtics extended their condolences to the Thomas family in a statement on Saturday. “We are terribly saddened by the tragic loss of Chyna Thomas,” the Celtics said in the statement. “The thoughts and prayers of the entire Celtics organization are with Isaiah and his family.”
NBA commissioner Adam Silver also released a statement, saying: “The NBA family mourns the tragic passing of Chyna Thomas, and we send our deepest condolences to Isaiah, his family and the Celtics organization during this difficult time”.
Isaiah Thomas is having a huge season. He was named an NBA All-Star for the second consecutive year and is averaging 28.9 points and 5.8 assists, all while leading the Celtics to the top seed in the Eastern Conference.
