James Harden is known for his stellar play on the basketball court, but in 2015, he remained a fixture on gossip blogs, due to his relationship with Khloe Kardashian.
After seven months of dating, the two split in early 2016, though it’s unclear why… until now.
In a recent piece for Sports Illustrated, Harden finally explained why the two broke-up, though he doesn’t mentioned Khloe by name. Apparently, he considered the year they were dating as “the worst year of his life”.
Though Khloé later claimed she ended things after Harden cheated on her, he makes it clear, he wasn’t cut out for the attention that came from dating a Kardashian.
“I didn’t like all the attention,” Harden told SI. “I feel like it was for no reason. I wasn’t getting anything out of it except my name out there and my face out there, and I don’t need that. It wasn’t uncomfortable, but it wasn’t me. I don’t need pictures of myself when I’m driving my car. Who cares? What shoes am I wearing? Who cares? [Ed. note: adidas did!] Where am I eating? Who cares? It was unnecessary stuff that I think trickled down to my teammates. I had to eliminate that.”
In 2016, Harden made some drastic changes to his life. He dropped the celebrity relationship and began training in Phoenix instead of Los Angeles, in order to get his priorities back in order… and he credits this to his current success.
“I’m not worried about anything but hooping, and that may be why I’m having this kind of success,” he says.
“I like knowing I’m not going to see myself,” Harden added, regarding tabloid stories. “It feels good.”
Harden put up huge numbers during the 2015-16 NBA season, averaging 29.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists, but he struggled to play alongside Dwight Howard and was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. It was tough year for him.
He’s turned things around this year though, and is now an MVP candidate. So, it’s safe to say, ending his relationship with Khloe was for the best.
