A number of retired NBA players has joined a 3-on-3 basketball league called BIG3, and founded by Ice Cube.

Players who have signed up include Allen Iverson, Kenyon Martin, Chauncey Billups, Stephen Jackson, Rashard Lewis, Jermaine O’Neal, Jason Williams, Mike Bibby and Bonzi Wells, among others.

“When I got the call it was a no-brainer, it’s Ice … you don’t turn that down,” Iverson said at a press conference in New York this week to introduce the league. “That’s success looking you right into your eyes. I just wanted to be a part of it and I hope that me being a part of it makes it a success like everything he’s been doing in his life.”

Iverson retired from the league back in 2011, but is excited to get back on the court and play in front of a new younger generation of fans. “I’m going to put my effort into it to make sure it can be as big as ever,” he said.

Cube calls BIG3 the “ultimate basketball fan experience”.

“The BIG3 was created as the ultimate basketball fan experience,” Ice Cube said. “We’re bringing some of the baddest names to ever play the game, and giving them a platform to not only showcase their skills, but to entertain their fans in a high-energy, physical and competitive environment. As a diehard basketball fan, I personally can’t wait to see my favorite players back in action.”

The league will consist of eight teams with five players on each. The teams will compete over a 10-week season, the final two of which will serve as the playoffs. Instead of using a clock, the first team that gets to 60 points wins, with a halftime once a team reaches 30 points.

There’s a few unique details as well.¬†Games will be played in half-court settings and will feature 4-point shots, designated by three large circles several feet beyond the traditional 3-point line.

Ex-professional players over the age of 30 will be eligible to play, with BIG3 holding a draft to fill the rosters in March and the league’s first season starts on June 24.

Currently, the league does not have a TV deal.
