Lakers to Unveil Shaquille O'Neal Statue

As previously announced, the Los Angeles Lakers plan to erect a statue outside Staples Center in Los Angeles to pay tribute to the dominant big man. However, the unveiling date wasn’t revealed unveil now.

The Lakers announced Tuesday (Dec. 20) that a 9-foot bronze statue of the Hall of Famer will be unveiled before the Lakers’ game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on March 24, 2017.

Julie Rotblatt Amrany and Omri Amran were commissioned to create the statue by the Lakers, Staples Center and AEG. The pair previously created statues ¬†of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Chick Hearn and Jerry West, all of which stand outside Staples Center at Star Plaza. O’Neal’s will join them next year.

Shaq’s statue will depict him dunking, and will be suspended 10 feet above the ground.

The ceremony will be free and open to the public, and will feature speeches from O’Neal, his teammates, colleagues and friends.

Shaq played with the Lakers from 1996-2004, winning three championships in the process, as well as Finals MVP honors in each title run. He was also named an All-Star seven times with the Lakers and 15 times overall.
