Donald Glover has been cast as Lando Calrissian in the upcoming young Han Solo Star Wars spinoff, LucasFilm announced Friday (Oct. 21).
Slated for release in 2018, Glover will play the iconic role, portrayed by Billy Dee Williams in the original trilogy. For avid fans, you may know Calrissian has a competitive friendship with Solo, after losing the starship Millennium Falcon to the smuggler in a card game.
Actor Alden Ehrenreich has been tapped to play the young Solo, a role made iconic by Harrison Ford.
The upcoming film is said to explore a previously unseen side of Calrissian, with Lucasfilm saying it will show “his formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy’s underworld.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources say the film will also show how the character lost the Millennium Falcon to Solo.
“We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us,” directors directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller said in a statement. “These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”
