While Metta World Peace won’t likely appear on the Los Angeles Lakers roster this season, the team still wants him… as an assistant coach.
Sources tell ESPN.com that the NBA veteran’s impact as a mentor to young players last season prompted them to invite him to training camp again under new coach Luke Walton. However, with competition for the Lakers’ 15th and final roster spot much stiffer, its unlikely World Peace will make the team.
The team would still like that leadership on their team, and are apparently interested in bringing him on as an assistant to Walton.
It’s currently unclear if Metta is considering the offer, being that he prefers to continue his playing career at age 36.
The Laker must make a decision on Monday (Oct. 24) by 5 p.m., when all NBA teams are required to finalize their 15-player roster, in advance of the first night of the regular season.
