Afeni Shakur, the mother of the late Tupac Shakur, has died. She was 69 years old.
Reports say Marin County deputies responded to her home in Sausalito, CA, on Monday night (May 2) sometime before 10:30 p.m., after she suffered a possible cardiac arrest. She was transported to a local hospital and passed away.
Afeni, born Alice Faye Williams, changed her name when she moved to New York City and joined the Black Panther movement. She, along with other party members, were arrested in 1969 and charged with conspiracy to bomb multiple, busy city landmarks.
In 1971, she was acquitted on all charges and gave birth to Tupac shortly after.
Tupac famously paid tribute to his Afeni on his 1995 hit single, “Dear Mama.”
Tupac passed away in 1996, following a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas. She took over his estate shortly after.
