A bevy of hip-hop’s stars gathered at NYC’s Apollo Theater on Tuesday night (April 5) to honor the legacy of late A Tribute Called Quest founding member, Phife Dawg.
In addition to Tribe members Q-Tip, Jarobi White and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, a number of others were in attendance — including Kanye West, Andre 3000, D’Angelo, The Roots and KRS-One.
Phife’s childhood friend and rhyme partner Q-Tip shared touching stories of the pair growing up in Queens, NY… specifically about admiring LL Cool J and Run-DMC before they made their own impact on hip-hop.
Later, André 3000 recalled how Outkast’s record label tried to market them as a “Southern Tribe,” while saying he regrets that a ATCQ/Outkast album never came to fruition.
