2014 NBA Finals MVP, Kawhi Leonard, has a $94 million contract with the San Antonio Spurs, but is probably the most humble guy in the league.
He’s one of the best in the league, averaging 21 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists a game this season, all while guarding the opposing team’s best player almost every night. Still, he’s not one for the spotlight, isn’t on social media … and lives an even more understated life off-the-court.
But, most of us don’t know much about him. However, a recent SI.com feature revealed a number of interesting facts about Leonard, like him driving a 1997 Chevy Tahoe.
“My motivation wasn’t really to get a $95 million contract, you know? I’m not out here just for the money,” Leonard told the San Diego Union last year. “I want to be a great player. I don’t feel anything changed. I already had money and security. You definitely see a difference in some guys’ games when they do get paid. I’m trying to make sure I’m not that player.”
He’s has splurged though. He does owns a Porsche, but other than on game nights, it sits in the garage. “That thing is in pristine condition,” Jeremy Castleberry, his high school and college teammate, told the paper. “Nobody drives it.”
Below are just a few surprising facts:
- Leonard spent a lot of his childhood parked in front of his TV watching the Michael Jordan documentary, Come Fly With Me.
- Leonard’s favorite subject in school was math and he used to “lose himself in geometry homework.”
- Leonard still drives a 1997 Chevy Tahoe that’s nicknamed “Gas Guzzler.” He does it because “it runs and it’s paid off.”
- Leonard freaked out after he lost a book of coupons from his sponsor Wingstop last summer and asked for them to give him new ones, so that he could get free wings.
