Tony Dyson, the man who built Star Wars’ iconic R2-D2 character, was found dead recently at his home on the Maltese island of Gozo. He was 68.
Friends alerted local authorities after they said they hadn’t seen Dyson for several days. At press time, police have ruled out suspicion of foul play and believe he likely died of natural causes.
Dyson built the R2-D2 models used in 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope, including the one worn by actor Kenny Baker.
He later went on to work on visual effects on several films, including Superman II, Dragon Slayer and the James Bond movie Moonraker.
