Star Wars: The Force Awakens is officially the highest-grossing film ever… in America.
On Monday and Tuesday this week, the film brought in $16 million, bringing its domestic haul to $758.2 million, putting it ahead of Avatar’s record.
For the first time in 18 years, James Cameron doesn’t hold the record, and for the first time in 40 years, James Cameron, George Lucas, or Steven Spielberg do not hold the claim… because J.J. Abrams now does. And, if you’re wondering, the adjusted-for-inflation gross of Avatar is $836 million, which The Force Awakens will eventually surpass perhaps towards the end of next week, reports Forbes.
As for worldwide, The Force Awakens may settle in in third, possibly second, when its run is over… behind Cameron’s Titanic ($2.186 billion) and Cameron’s Avatar ($2.788b). To date, Star Wars has earned $1.557 billion worldwide, with $799 million overseas alone.
Star Wars opens in China on Saturday, and would have to do a crazy number of $788 million in the country alone for a chance to break the worldwide record.
