Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The force is strong with the latest installment of Star Wars, as the film shattered records with a $238 million box office opening.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens earned the largest North American debut of all-time, destroying the previous record of $208.8 million, set by Jurassic World over the summer. Overseas, the film earned $279 million to bring its global haul to $517 million — second to Jurassic World’s $525 global total. While Jurassic World also opened in China, Star Wars doesn’t open there until Jan. 9.

The Force Awakens mainly drew an adult audience with 71 percent making up moviegoers and just 9 percent being teens. IMAX, 3D and large format screens accounted for 47 percent of ticket sales. IMAX screens alone accounted for $48 million of the global earnings.

In a distant second was Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, which opened with $14.4 million; and in third was the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler comedy, Sisters, earning $13.4 million out of the gates.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 lands at No. 4 with $5.6 million, and Creed closes out the top 5 with $5 million.

That’s a wrap for this weekend. This upcoming week, look out for the release of the Point Break reboot, Concussion starring Will Smith, Daddy’s Home, and the comedy Joy.
