Holly Holm’s first opponent as the UFC women’s champion will be … Ronda Rousey.
UFC president Dana White told the Los Angeles Times that a target date of July 9 in Las Vegas has been set for the anticipated rematch between Holm and Rousey. However, the contracts have yet to be inked, as both camps both must agree on the date, which hasn’t happened yet.
Holm’s manager Lenny Fresquez has stated Holm has interest in fighting Miesha Tate instead of waiting. White, however, says Rousey will be ready… and isn’t worried about what Lenny thinks.
“We’re real concerned with [Fresquez’s] opinion,” White said, sarcastically.
Fresquez told the Times: “Holly’s used to staying active. We’re from the old school, and we believe the No. 1 contender is there for a reason. [Tate] deserves a shot, but it’s not for me to decide.”
Holm (10-0) became the UFC women’s bantumweight champ last month, after knocking out Rousey (12-1) in the second round with a left kick to the head at UFC 193.
Rousey recently told ESPN that she wants the Holm fight, but is facing a lengthy recovery time from their last encounter.
