Peter Dougherty, one of the creators of the iconic 1990s show Yo! MTV Raps, has passed away.

According to the New York Times, Dougherty suffered a heart attack at his New York home back in Oct. 12. He was just 59.

Dougherty helped create Yo! MTV Raps with Ted Demme, with the pilot airing in August 1988. That year, it began airing weekly with host Fab 5 Freddy.

It was the first program to give hip-hop music video nation exposure.

"He was there when things were happening, not just one thing, but all the big things," said Beastie Boys' Ad-Rock.
