Hotel Transylvania 2

It looks like the animated Hotel Transylvania 2 is the star of September, after the film led the weekend box office.

The Sony Pictures film opens with $47.5 million in its debut weekend, making it the top September opener of all time. The previous record holder was the 2012 original, Hotel Transylvania, which opened to $42.5 million.

Hotel Transylvania 2 features the voices of Adam Sandler, Mel Brooks, Selena Gomez and Kevin James and is the only animated feature on the market until Peanuts opens in November.

The Intern, the PG-13 comedy starring Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro, took second with a solid $18.2 million.

After, last weekend's top film Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials falls to #3 with $14 million, Everest lands at #4 with $13 million, and Black Mass closes out the top 5 with $11.5 million.
