The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials

Despite the buzz surrounding Johnny Depp's return to form with Black Mass, it wasn't enough to take the weekend box office from The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials.

The sequel to 2014 film, The Maze Runner, earned $30.3 million to top the box office, slightly below the debut of the sci-fi original, while Black Mass, which stars Depp as the Boston mob boss Whitey Bulger, came in second with $23.4 million.

Landing in third was The Visit with $11.3 million, while The Perfect Guy fell to #1 to fourth with $9.6 million this weekend.

Closing out the top 5 was Universal's 3-D mountaineering thriller Everest, which opened with $7.6 million, playing only on 545 IMAX and large-format screens. It expands wide next weekend.

Captive opened in 806 theaters, but earned just $1.4 million for 11th place.

That's a wrap for this weekend. This upcoming week, look out for the release of the horror flick The Green Inferno, the animated Hotel Transylvania 2, and the comedy The Intern, starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway.
