After defeating her sister Venus earlier in the week, Serena Williams continued her pursuit of the calendar-year Grand Slam on Friday (Sept. 11)… but came up short.
The 21-time major champion’s shot at history was thwarted by unseeded Italian Roberta Vinci in the US Open semifinals. The sets scores are as follows: 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Williams was attempting to become the first woman to win all four majors in a season since Steffi Graf in 1988. She could’ve tied Graf for the second-most Grand Slam singles titles behind Margaret Court’s 24.
With Serena out, Vinci will go on to face countrywoman Flavia Pennetta, who defeated No. 2 seed Simona Halep earlier Friday, in the US Open final.
