San Andreas

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and his San Andreas action flick took over the weekend box office, earning a $53.2 million debut. It's the biggest opening of the actor's career.

Studios feared that West Coast audiences would stay away, due to being located in earthquake-prone regions. But apparently, that wasn't the case.

"Some people felt they'd be a little nervous watching such a disaster hit both Los Angeles and San Francisco, but there was a curiosity factor," Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution for Warner Bros., told the AP. "They went, they packed the theaters and they liked it."

The weekend's other wide release Aloha, from director Cameron Crowe, opened at #6 with just $10 million.

Pitch Perfect 2 held at #2 with $14.3 million; Tomorrowland fell to #3 with $13.8 million; Mad Max: Fury Road came in fourth with $13.6 million; and Avengers: Age of Ultron closed out the top 5 with $10.9 million.

That's a wrap for this weekend. This upcoming week, look out for the release of Insidious Chapter 3, Melissa McCarthy's Spy, and the anticipated big screen adaptation of Entourage.
