A starter has yet to be determined, but the Cleveland Browns ar giving Josh McCown the starter’s reps during the offseason and at the start of training camp.
Coach Mike Pettine told ESPN Friday (May 8), being that McCown is taking the starter’s reps, it will be “fair to say” he has the inside track on starting the season opener.
“Josh will more than likely be the starter going into camp,”he said. “In the foreseeable future, I don’t see that changing.”
For now, second-year QB Johnny Manziel will share second-team reps with Thad Lewis and Connor Shaw, something the three have been doing during offseason work.
McCown is getting the edge because of his experience, Pettine said. As far as Manziel, he said the team feels its too close to him leaving a 10-week stay in rehab to start putting too much on his plate.
“To me, we want [Manziel] essentially with horse blinders on,” Pettine said. “Focused on his job, getting up every day, perfecting his craft. … That he’s much more concerned about himself than really anything else.
“I think it’s too early to start expanding what we’re asking [him] to do and what we’re wanting him to get involved in.”
We’ll have to wait and see if Manziel gets a shot in the upcoming season.
