Former Bad Boy Records signee Black Rob is set to return with a new album later this month, entitled Geniuine Article.
In support of the new project, the rap vet stopped by the SiriusXM show, Sway In The Morning, where he emotionally opened up about his health, dispelling rumors of drug use and confirming that he suffered a stroke.
“It ain’t no drugs. Lately, I had high blood pressure,” Rob explained. “Being that I have that, that takes a lot out of a brother. Going on tour, you don’t even know. This is a real serious… I had a stroke. Yea, I had a stroke… and ummm, I got over that.
“It’s been high blood pressure and trying to stay on top of this thing. Being on top, it’s hard. I got over it,” he continued. “After [the stroke], I was in the wind. I came out of it. It’s hard, but I can do it.”
His baby’s mother found him and he had to be rushed to the hospital in the middle of the night, and it served as a wake up call.
“It’s crazy [I had it in my sleep],” Rob explained. “My baby’s moms found me. I went to the hospital and I found out I took a lost and found out I had a stroke.
“I was like, ‘Yo, what? I had a stroke.’ I’m thinking that I’m supposed to be passed out. They told me you had a mild stroke. I was like, ‘Damn, I dunno… word.’ ”
After the health episode, Rob says he’s had to re-think his whole lifestyle, from his diet to his party habits.
“I had to change my health regimen and how I eat. That’s it. I’m exercising and trying to keep it up,” said Rob. “I don’t drink no more. That right there was telling me that I had to stop. Every time I come out, I drink. I just got tired of it. Now, I’m back. I’m working against that and trying to be the best thing I can be. It’s hard.
“I gotta stop everything I’m doing. I gotta stay right if I wanna stay alive.”
Rob’s new album, Genuine Article, is due out April 21.
