It’s been three years since hip-hop legends De La Soul dropped their last album, but are ready to get back into the studio … with their fans’ help.
The trio has launched Kickstarter campaign to fund their upcoming LP.
De La is calling it their first group studio album in 11 years. It will “incorporate elements of Jazz, Funk, Rock, Country Western and anything else we’re feeling in the moment,” says the group.
“To us, music is the influence of sounds, sounds in all vibrations and sizes, telling a story or pointing a direction. Some of these sounds we call samples, samples we use to make songs,” De La explained, as well as revealing that, after years of fighting for sample clearances, they will sample themselves.
The album will feature the likes of Damon Albarn (of Blur/Gorillaz), 2 Chainz, Little Dragon, and David Byrne (of Talking Heads).
De La Soul set a $110,000 funding goal, and as of press time, have reached $214,115. Their plan is to release the album in May.
